The real protagonist of the novel is Mesklin, characteristics of the planet from "impossible" that Clement has imagined in the wake of some discoveries about the system Solar binary 61 Cygni. These observations suggest the presence of a considerable mass of the planet that the author, creating Mesklin, equipped, well, an enormous speed. The world described by Clement has so much the shape of a flattened ellipsoid due to the highest value taken by the centrifugal force at the equator, which causes this large discrepancy between the present force of gravity at the poles (700g) and the equator (3g).
The atmosphere of the planet is composed primarily of hydrogen and the seas are composed of liquid methane. Mesklin is inhabited by an alien race of intelligent, robust but small centipede able to withstand the enormous forces present on the surface of the planet.
The novel tells the adventures of a crew that Meskliniti, contacted and driven by the first human expedition to the system, run through parts of the world never explored before ...
The work is certainly the most prestigious scientific verisimilitude with which Clement and creates describes in great detail "his" Mesklin. Jar, however, the 'humanity' of the aliens and the excessive ease with which members of the human expedition can talk and communicate with them also appear unrealistic sidereal distances, amounting to tens of thousands of kilometers, which are carried along, though often by boat, these poor centipede extraterrestrial insects the size similar to ours ...
Overall it is a pleasant enough read, with good scientific ideas, but suffers from a plot a bit 'repetitive, with the gaps that we have highlighted, and a final hasty and too obvious.
